February 23: CommuniTEA!

CommuniTEA is our weekly virtual program where students (2nd to 8th grade) and mentors meet to share feelings, write and create together. Enjoy our CommuniTEA update below:

I'll admit I was skeptical. When the agenda for today’s CommuniTEA time was put forth as “make a literary riddle or puzzle for others (the upcoming citywide Seattle Odyssey Scavenger Hunters) to solve”, I had my doubts. Good riddles are hard to solve – and harder to create. Good exercise but probably a fool’s errand.

I missed it by a mile. There wasn’t a single doubter in the crowd! The roll-call of students at BFI is full of super intellectual, emotional, and creative members of our society. In less than ten minutes, 14 of them they proposed 54 solid responses to the challenge at hand.

After coming up with ideas for the Seattle Odyssey challenge, students were introduced to a book of imagination called the BFI Idea Book! This awesome book contains many creative challenges to work on, including lots of different writing, drawing and deep thinking exercises. We're excited to explore this book more in future sessions!

When I left CommuniTEA, the only thing I could think of was “Get ready for them, world. They’re gonna' change a lot of the things that are wrong into the things that are right. Credit the parents that bring them here. Credit the staff and volunteers that create the incubator for them."

Just don’t forget to credit THEM!

This week's tea recommendation: Perfect Peach Bigelow Herbal Tea!

Until next time!
